A friend jus gave me a 81 express sr that he said had been sitting for a couple of years. First thing I did was pull the spark plug and put a little oil inside the piston. Then I drained the old gas and put in fresh fuel and oil, then I tried to crank it with no luck. Then I took off the carb and cleaned it (It was a mess float vavle stuck shut and a lot of sludge and trash in the bowl). Then I tried to start it again no luck. To make a long story short I took the carb off 5 diffrent times and 5 times it failed to start. Just when I was about to give up I came inside and fired up the old puter and found this web site and started reading the forum and read a message about mufflers being stopped up would not let it run (Ran back outside checked the muffler sure enough it was stopped up. Cleaned it out kicked it one time it purred like a kitten) Jus wanna say thanks for the help.

[Still got a long way to go Tires,Front brakes,Battery,Repair starter, and some little things]
Thanks Again Mike

Hello, and thanks for having this site. I own a 1981 Honda Express, and use it every summer. It's GREAT and I would like to buy another one so friends could ride with me. I live in Portland, Oregon. Would you please suggest how I should go about finding one, and how much I can expect to pay? Lightly used, and in good shape. The Honda shop where I take it for tuneups says that they never get these older bikes in for re-sale. I have a messed-up leg from an old car accident and find that the lightness and the step-through frame is just right for me. Thanks! Ms. Basja Samuelson

Honda express tragic tales by robert

I just got back from a 330 mile trip to a southeast MO state park on my cobbled together '78 Honda expess. It did fine until the last 50 miles or so. Then in wouldn't go over 15 mph and sounded like it was running thru mud. I have changed everything (muffler, points, coil) but have decided it's the carb because when I shut the stopcock valve on the fuel line almost all the way it runs like it used to (for short spurts). It surges and I have concluded it's running too rich but I've got the air/fuel mix screw ALL THE WAY IN and it still won't run right until you shut the fuel flow down real low (or until it's about to run out of gas.) I have 2 other carbs (both crap) and I've swapped and they're worst still. I'll try the "c" clip on the throttle needle trick but this sounds more serious. I really want to get this puppy running because the 300 mile trip was just my shakedown cruise and I want to go out of state. Did I mention you can take tent, tools and camping supplies on an express. Any help appreciated.

Great site.

George..got the muffler cleaned out and the bike worked good, to good, found out it has some sort of governor on it, went nice and fast- but now I'm afraid the "rush" of gas thru it has now clogged up the carb., going to put the cleaned out muffler on the '81 and use it while Itacklethe carb. problem, the problem with the '81 is that the divider in the fuel tank has a hole rusted thru it and I have to mix the oil and gas
any suggestions on what the mixture should be?
thanks again for your help

Rex
try 50 to 1 that's 8oz injector oil to 3 Gallons gas mix in gas can then pour into tank
